🌙 What is Ekadashi — Meaning & Purpose

  • “Ekadashi” literally means “eleventh” — it refers to the 11ᵗʰ lunar day (tithi) in each lunar fortnight (waxing / waning) of the Hindu calendar.

  • Thus, Ekadashi occurs twice a month — once in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) and once in the dark half (Krishna Paksha).

  • The fast / vrat on Ekadashi is dedicated to Vishnu (or his avatars), honoring him as the preserver of the universe.

  • The spiritual aim: self-discipline, control over senses and mind, cleansing body & mind, inner purification, devotion — a path toward peace, spiritual upliftment and (ultimately) liberation (moksha).

  • Physically / health wise: fasting is believed to help detox the body, improve digestion, give mental clarity, and support physical well-being.

Because Ekadashi is determined by the lunar calendar, the exact dates shift each year in the Gregorian calendar — hence a yearly calendar helps devotees plan.

🌼 What Ekadashi Gives — Benefits & Why We Do It

  • Spiritual purification: Observing Ekadashi helps cleanse past karmas and purify the devotee’s mind and soul.

  • Self-discipline & control: Fasting and abstaining from grains/regular food helps develop self-restraint, control over senses — promoting inner strength and peace.

  • Physical / health benefits: Easier digestion, detoxification, mental clarity, improved focus, sometimes as a natural “reset” for body and mind.

  • Spiritual focus & devotion: A day dedicated to prayer, chanting, meditation, reading scriptures, connecting with divine, offering gratitude — fostering humility, devotion and inner calm.

  • Karma cleansing & blessings: Many Ekadashis are believed to remove sins (pap), bestow blessings, help in spiritual growth, bring prosperity, mental peace, and pave way to liberation (moksha).
